Frustrated, Enraged, Bored to death, and all of a sudden, ecstatic, full of hopes, a feel like new dawn: that’s what it feels to be a Manchester united fan these days. But one thing that tops this list of attributes is: Nostalgic. Those eye pleasing fast counter attacking football seem long gone, those late comebacks that trigger adrenaline rush is a distant memory.
For a fan like me who grew being treated with the Sir Alex Ferguson era, its been a total new territory. Unsure of what to expect from upcoming match, speculating how Lvg’s certain tactics cost us a game, unsatisfied with the ugly win but satisfied for 3 points(however it came), yeah these describe my mental state on most weekend(and few of the champions league night as well ;) ).
An epitome of late comeback that comes to my mind. A game between Manchester united and Newcastle played on boxing day of 2012. A goal scoring frenzy where Newcastle took the lead early on. After a dramatic 90 minute, it ended 4-3 for United and the final goal was scored by none other than our Chicharito in the 90th minute. After he scored the winner, the commentator says, “Cream always rises to the top”. It still resounds on my ear as a sweet melody.
A Robin van persie’s deflected winner against City in a 3-2 home win, 8-2 thrashing to the gunners, these are some of the gems around the dusk of Ferguson era. However, it was not full of roses every time. A home humiliation of 6-1 by the noisy neighbor, a 4-4 draw against everton in a match where we were leading by 2 goals that ultimately cost us the premiere league title on goal difference. But there was this aura about our spirit. That never say die attitude, that so called fergie time. These are the brightest stars twinkling in my sky of memory.
Fast forward couple of years and 3 managers(including an interim one), I happened to sleep during one of the goal less match and when I woke it was still goal less and those side ways passing and high possession was still going on. Well, I must say there are some occasional bright spots as well. A vintage Manchester United 3-0 home thrashing to Stoke, a henry-esque goal for Martial in his debut against bitter rival Liverpool, rise of Rashford as future star and his 2 goals PL debut. These are the things that have kept our blood “red” and running.
